Anthony Joshua says Fury’s SugarHill trainer is ‘very competent’ to coach him
Anthony Joshua’s trainer bingo continues, no one is sure but the heavyweight himself if anything has been agreed.
Joshua unified the heavyweight belt under British coach and Olympic head coach, Robert McCracken. However, it is a partnership that looks set to last throughout ‘AJ’s career, after a crushing defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021, the Watford man split from McCracken and sought a hold. Robert Garcia.
Garcia, who coached the likes of Jose Ramirez and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, took part in the rematch against Usyk. Joshua briefly reappears, cementing the Ukrainians as champions and leaving the British in rebuilding mode.
While many felt that there were improvements shown in the second bout, the relationship between the boxer and the coach seemed to grow apart in the weeks that followed. Garcia said he is willing to train Joshua, but wants to do it in the US. Meanwhile, Joshua is having interesting conversations with others, including former four-weight world champion, Roy Jones Jr.
With the situation seemingly unfolding, ‘AJ’ was recently asked again what was going on in the camp. Talking to ID BoxingJoshua responded positively when SugarHill Steward was suggested.
“He is a very good coach. He is very qualified to coach me. Very qualified.”
The flight attendant is an interesting topic, not because he’s a great trainer who can bring out the best in Joshua’s style, but because he’s currently managing the corner of a Tyson Fury.
The ‘King of Gypsy’ has flourished under the guidance of coach Kronk, won by stopping in three of his last four after a career perhaps better suited to go away.
While ‘AJ’ may know that linking up with the coach many consider to be his biggest rival in the division is untenable, it is interesting to hear him say that the relationship cooperation will be a good relationship.
While his training is still uncertain, what is certain is that ‘King of Gypsy’ will have something to say about this.
