Anthony Edwards ‘punishes to highlight NBA’s homophobia issue

The NBA on Tuesday is fined Minnesota Timberwolves defended Anthony Edwards $40,000 for anti-gay comments he made in an Instagram story. Edwards apologized last week after the backlash, saying his comments were “immature, hurtful and disrespectful.”

The response to the fine shows that the NBA has a long way to go when it comes to tolerance for the LGBTQ+ community. The Denver Nuggets Forward and Forever dunk contest also run by Aaron Gordon reacted with three dislike emojis to news of the fine in a deleted tweet. Whatever Gordon’s intentions may be, his reply sends the message that it’s okay for anti-LGBTQ+ people to defame him.

Former player Jason Collins came out as gay in 2013 and then became the first openly gay NBA player when the Brooklyn Nets signed him to close out the 2013-14 season. The NBA still regularly has problems with players who use anti-gay language. In 2011, Kobe Bryant fined $100,000 for directing a homophobic slur towards the referee. Rajon Rondo was suspended for a game for making anti-gay slurs against referee Bill Kennedy, who then openly he is gay.

There has been a lot of progress, such as former Warriors president Rick Welts, the first openly gay executive in the four major US professional sports, but as Edwards video and Gordon’s reaction… Obviously, the NBA still has a long way to go when it comes to tolerance for people.
