‘Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ – Big (r) and In Charge

The beauty of Ant Man’s story, aside from Paul Rudd’s presence, is how small it is compared to other MCU games.

It doesn’t refer to our little hero. Stories that lack global appeal, such as “Captain Marvel” or “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Smaller can be better, especially in too bulky MCU. “Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” drops that approach.

Oh oh.

It’s massive, both in terms of imagination and villain, a monster that anchors phase five of the MCU. Co-star Jonathan Majors may just be a Thanos-sized threat to our colorfully dressed heroes.

Ant Man grows as easily as he shrinks, and it turns out his franchise can too.

Scott Lang (Rudd) is balancing life as an Avenger with raising his strong-willed daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton).

She has some Pym inside, creating a new way to create the Quantum Realm. That after-school experiment backfires, sending the father and son along with the Pyms family – Hank, Janet and Hope (Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer and Evangeline Lilly) into a world of mystery.

They are trapped and attempt to reunite, but they soon encounter a presence monitoring the fractured landscape. It’s Kang the Conquerer, played with a sense of evil calibrated by Majors.

We’ll stop the plot analysis here, allowing the audience to explore this area of CGI and all it has to offer. Just know that this is possibly the most visually ambitious MCU movie to date, and the dedication to FX detail is astounding.

Not “Avatar”but it is the only recent film to achieve the splendor captured here.

Once again Rudd is the near-perfect hero – brave against impossible odds but always underestimating his worth. It’s a balance that hasn’t worn away its welcome.

Newton’s Cassie is in danger of becoming a kind of Mary Sue or SJW scolded, but the adventure that awaits will not happen.

Douglas and Pfeiffer fixed a series of silly episodes at the beginning of the film, the kind that evoked more giggles than laughter. However, screenwriter Jeff Loveness (no, Adam McKay wasn’t a contributing scribe this time around) turns those flourishes into something significant in the third act.

Impression.

So is the structure of the film. Sure you will point out some holes in the plot, but the story is so good and the effect makes things sharper.

Director Peyton Reed once again showcases the series’ humor, but it’s not as witty as previous installments. For starters, the wraparound lacks the amusing antics of “Ant Man and the Wasp.” Rudd still keeps the factors light, even if the stakes are sizable.

The sequel offers solid new players, including the rude and chaotic Katy O’Brian as a Quantum Realm warrior and William Jackson Harper as a mind-reading ally. That, plus an extended cameo by a recently canceled major star has prompted the proceedings.

We are also given a secondary villain, who brings both laughter and intimidation. There are no revelations here, but his presence lends a sly connection to the earlier “Ant” strands.

“Quantumania” kicks off Phase V of the MCU and isn’t coming any time soon. The previous wave of MCUs crushed the franchise under the weight of weak sequels, awakening pure measures and chaotic stories.

What’s the point of all those movies again?

“Ant Man and the Wasp” teamed up to clean up the palate, and Majors seems poised to give the Avengers the right fit. Take it away.

Hit or miss: “Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” delivers suspense, imaginative creatures, and heroism on an astonishingly large scale.
