Another samurai-era Like A Dragon remake could happen if Ishin does well

A remake of the Like A Dragon Ryū Ga Gotoku Kenzan sequel is likely, but the RGG Studio developers say they will only consider it if the series’ sequel is coming. Ishin was a “big hit.” The comments made in a recent interview by ungeek with RGG Studio executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama and director Hiroyuki Sakamoto. Although the Ishin remake was announced during Sony’s State Of Play stream in September, Kenzan seems to be a long way from being picked up for the remake.

Kenzan is a Japanese exclusive in the Ryū Ga Gotoku series that was released on PlayStation 3 in 2008 and is Like A Dragon’s first samurai-era spinoff. The game is set two centuries before Ishin and focuses on the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. In the game, Mushashi looks exactly like today’s Like A Dragon protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. Yokoyama says he feels Kenzan will need “a whole new game of its own” to turn its basic outlines into something players today will appreciate.

“Game based on combat system [that] quite incomplete compared to today’s Like a Dragon games, especially with things like character movements and action animations,” said Yokoyama. “Things will have to improve, and in a significant way.” Even so, RGG Studio has improved on previous PS2 and PS3 games like A Dragon or Yakuza. The first two Like A Dragon games were remade into yakuza kiwami and it next partcame to PC in 2019. Yakuza: Collection Remastered also brought Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 to Steam last year, but it’s a simpler port of the original PS3 games.

“Another thing is that, even to start thinking about recreating Kenzan as a game, Like a Dragon: Ishin would have to become a huge hit in the market to start that conversation on its own,” Yokoyama added. . Given that RGG is already working on the series’ next main game Like Dragon 8along with spin-offs like Ishin and the amazing name Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Removed His Name, they are likely to be quite busy over the next few years. Maybe we’ll see a Kenzan remake later?

Like A Dragon: Ishin is out Steam on February 21, 2023 for £50/$60/€60. I’ll let you know if there are any more rumors about a Kenzan, Majima-style remake.
