Anisimova against defending champion Naomi at Australian Open
Both the defending men’s and women’s singles champions at the Australian Open will not qualify for the round of 16, as 14th-placed Naomi Osaka lost to 60th-placed Amanda Anisimova in the third round on Friday, 4- 6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-5).
Defending Men’s Singles Champion Novak Djokovic lose his last appeal to participate in the Grand Slam event despite being unvaccinated against COVID-19 on Sunday.
Anisimova, 20, of America, saved two points in the crucial third set and ended the stunning victory with an ace. She registered 46 winners compared to just 21 for Osaka.
“I knew I had to play sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance.” Anisimova said, according to ESPN.
