Andy Murray: I don’t deserve to play like Roger Federer | Tennis News
Andy Murray believes the emotional scenes welcoming the end of Roger Federer’s playing career at this week’s Laver Cup were “super special”.
It was a single finale where England’s Murray, the former world No. 1, had no intention of competing.
“I certainly wouldn’t and certainly didn’t deserve such a farewell,” Murray said.
Federer played his final match as a doubles match alongside great rival and friend Rafael Nadal on Friday, with Murray and Novack Djokovic in attendance as part of the European team at the Laver Cup, all were all in front of a packed O2 Arena to bid him farewell.
Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, did not win that match or the Laver Cup and this opportunity proved to be a special goodbye.
“Roger deserved that night and it was special to have all the people there watching on the court side,” Murray said.
At the time, 35-year-old Murray’s thoughts were natural on how he might end his own career.
“I won’t have a farewell match,” he revealed.
“I’ll probably announce when I’ll be playing my last event, but that’s when I don’t know.”
Murray is traumatized in the past and plans to continue playing.
“I’m still playing competitive tennis and I feel physically good against top players,” he said.
“I just have to start turning those close losses and closing games into wins. It’s as simple as that.”
