Andthewinneris Oscar-Deserving in Bourbon Stakes
Standing in the warm afternoon sun. October 9 at Keeneland after winning Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes (G2T) with his hybrid And the winner is Susan Moulton couldn’t help but reflect on the events that led up to that moment.
The San Antonio-born girl grew up on a ranch surrounded by racing, with her father often riding in Texas and Louisiana. She continued to work in the business of both equestrian and sales.
Tragedy struck in 2007 when Moulton lost his 8-year-old son, Will, to a car accident while on a family trip to Hawaii. The loss prevented her from getting involved with horses.
Moulton said: “I didn’t live for a while when my young son was killed in 2007. “We used to be racehorses, we would gallop in Retama (the Park), and we’re going to buy cheap horses up here and bring them back and break them and train them and sell them for training 2 years old. I got rid of all that when Will died. “
Moulton said she credits Wayne Catalano, who coached his 2-year-old son Oscar Performance for helping her regain her footing in the industry.
“It’s really Wayne that got me back into the game. I came in with some of my girlfriends, Michelle Lovell, we used to gallop together at Retama. We came on the weekend and I met Wayne and then That’s when my life changed a little bit,” Moulton said.
“I said, ‘I miss this and I want to be on the other end, I want to be the owner right now.’ …We’ve been there a couple of times along the way, but it’s always Wayne who brings me to Breeders’ Cup.”
Besides being the first bet winner for his male, Andthewinneris automatically won a spot at Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at the same track on November 4.
Forging his own way out of the herd is Andthewinneris, who glides outside to make his way to second place. He took the lead inside the eighth column and crossed the rope at 1:41.27 with 2 3/4 of the length to spare while setting the course record. Deer District holds second place and Really Good is third.
Andthewinneris paid $10.18 and improved his record to 2-0-2 after four starts. His earnings increased to $282,243.
Catalano said he feels the foal will stand a good chance in the weeks leading up to the race.
“He’s been training really well. I like the way this horse is doing,” Catalano said. “The Saratoga race was two turns, it made us perfect. I thought, ‘You know what? We can win this race the way this horse is training.”
“It’s unbelievable. Breeders’ Cups are very special races and I’m delighted to be participating in a few of them this year.”
Moulton bred Andthewinneris from the mare Scat Daddy Run Like the Boss, who had two winners from three ponies to race. She also has a desire Drag colt and drop a Cupid this year the name is Bonne Fille. She was bred again Raging Bull for the year 2023.
When asked how she chose the name for the pony, Moulton answered intelligently.
“If you think about it at the Oscars, what is the moment where everyone stands in their chairs?” The nominees are … and the winners are,” Moulton said.
“He’s meant to be sold. I have the farm and the mares. We breed for sale, and if we don’t sell them, then we run a race, and this is what happens when you This is what happens when you don’t buy our horses.”
