According to the source, a “concerned family member” requested a wellness check for Avila on Monday, August 26. CNN Note that Avila missed the first day of school.
Police reportedly went to Avila’s dorm room and discovered her body. They also found the body of an “unidentified man” with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The newspaper added that because of a “letter” found at the scene, it appeared the man had killed Avila before killing himself.
According to CNNThe note “indicates that the couple had been in a troubled romantic relationship.” Furthermore, Rice University Police Chief Clemente Rodriguez explained that it was likely that the main perpetrator accompanied Avila to her dormitory on the day of the fatal shooting.

The rest of the day’s classes and extracurricular activities were also postponed until the lockdown was lifted at 8:18 p.m.

According to the source, university president Reginald DesRoches later issued a statement about Avila’s death.
“It is with great sadness and shock that I write to you on what should be a day filled with promise and new beginnings,” President DesRoches explained. USA TODAY“Instead, we find ourselves grieving the loss of one person in a tragic event that has rocked our entire campus…tonight we will embrace our students.”
Additionally, the university announced that a “call center” has been set up to support the community during the tragedy.

Meanwhile, officers at Rice University are reportedly investigating the apparent murder-suicide with assistance from the Houston Police Department, according to CNNClasses at the university are said to have been canceled through Tuesday.
A 25-year-old man has been killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Ohio.

Keleman is said to have pulled in front of a 53-year-old man named Jason Williams. Williams, in turn, honked at Keleman’s car before crashing into the back of her car.
