Andor review: Mature Star Wars pushes the galaxy, just like Rogue One

Andor – premieres Wednesday on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar – revisits Diego Luna’s protagonist, Cassian Andor, first introduced on Rogue One nearly six years ago. (It’s set five years before the Star Wars movie, though, when the Rebel Alliance is in its infancy and Andor wants nothing to do with a major resistance.) Fits a set. Darker than anything in its universe and expanding the definition of what can happen in Star Wars, its TV prequel is more mature than anything we’ve ever seen. seen before from a galaxy far, far away. Andor visits a brothel in the first 10 minutes, and he kills two men later in the episode. This is not a heroic character, nor was he in Rogue One, where he killed an injured informant because he was a liability.

It’s only appropriate then Andor‘S boldness comes from Rogue One The uncredited co-writer and director has decided to return to director Tony Gilroy, who takes over as creator, host and lead writer for the new season. Star Wars series. (He wasn’t the first choice, just like in Rogue One.) Working with Nightcrawler writer-director brother Dan Gilroy, and House of Cards creator and showrunner Beau Willimon, Tony Gilroy and Co. created the Star Wars series that matched their talents. At one end, there are offices and the Imperial building. On the other hand, we have made it difficult for the rebels who are always afraid, lurking on the fringes and fighting for their survival. But they also have things in common. The rebels looked at each other with suspicion, just as their counterparts in their sleek white offices ran the Empire.

There’s a degree of gloom in every corner of the Andor – and that makes sense. After all, there are no Jedi here pursuing a pure soul or heart, no good people who believe in the Force, and no hero with a brave spirit willing to push things into the boundaries. This is the end of the line, following in the footsteps of non-lampmakers, who must be overcome with ingenuity, negotiation, and hard work. It was about the people who sketched out existence at the edge of the Empire. It makes Andor more relatable and more consistent – its characters don’t have superpowers or specialized armor – though that also means it’s not quite what Star Wars has trained us to expect, right even on the small screen. I hope it may disappoint some, but this is exactly what to expect from the man behind Rogue One.

All you need to know about AndorNew Star Wars Series

Five years ago Rogue One, Andor begins with Cassian Andor (Luna) based on the desert world of Ferrix, where he lives with his adoptive mother Maarva (Fiona Shaw, from Harry Potter movies) and droid B2EMO, who is commonly known as Bee to Andor. While B2EMO happily does its bidding, it feels left out because Andor isn’t part of its adventure. But their time together was over. After an incident on the corporate planet Morlana One, Andor is forced to flee. He is aided by a black market agent and the Rebel recruits Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård, from Chernobyl), who drew him into the early plans of the fledgling resistance. We might know where he’s going, but for now, Andor is basically a paid mercenary.

This makes up four episodes that are 30–40 minutes long – all critics, myself included, have access to a third Andoris the first season – but that’s only because Star Wars the series gives way to a host of other faces.

One of them involves a young Andor, or rather “Kassa”, on his birth planet Kenari. Today, we have Morlana’s deputy inspector, Syril Karn (Kyle Soller, from Poldark), who goes on a personal mission to pursue Andor. The Star Wars series also makes room for Imperial officer Dedra Meero (Denise Gough, from Too Close), who also has Andor in her sights. There’s Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona, from Morbius), a friend of Andor on Ferrix, who fixes machines and is dragged on a quest for revenge. And finally, there’s Empire senator Mon Mo Henrik (Genevieve O’Reilly, returning from Rogue One with Luna) in the galactic capital Coruscant, who is trying to do good within the constraints of the galaxy. The Empire while secretly trying to form the Rebel Alliance.

Each of these characters, and their resulting situations, are an addition to the Andor. Through Mo Henri, the new Star Wars series faces the risks of operating from the heart of the Empire. This has been suggested but never explored in Obi-Wan Kenobi. In Dedra’s case, she is pushing for change – or rather, her own advancement – in the Royal bureaucratic structures, but it’s not in the name of better things like with Mo Henrich. Dedra not only fights with a monolithic system, but also a system filled with men who have failed upwards.

With Bix and Syril, those are more primitive desires. Both have experienced loss, and to fill that hole in their lives, they go after something that can give meaning to their lives. And with Kenari’s flashback, Andor delve into what Star Wars has always been, in a way. Wishing to bring order to the galaxy, Empire has a high need for organization, which is evident in its minimalist design principles. This flattened the cultures, peoples and worlds in its way, who lost their livelihoods and had to be displaced – or worse, killed – because of the Empire’s grand plans. While Rogue One showed what an armed profession looks like, Andor presents a more mundane but equally dire scenario.

To the tune of the new Star Wars series, Luna plays a more engaging version of Cassian Andor, who is currently in it only for himself. Even though she was billed second, there wasn’t enough O’Reilly in the first four episodes. But in her brief presence, she brings shades of hurt and disappointment to a Mon Mo Henrik, who has been separated from the commander of the Rebel Alliance for years. The third-ranked Skarsgård is on two missions – I can’t say more – and has a gruff with his Luther Rael. He is clearly someone who has seen a lot of places in the world.

Arjona and Gough, who were fourth and fifth respectively, had very little activity Andorof the first four episodes. Arjona’s Bix Caleen has more cast time. The sixth Soller, meanwhile, has a big presence in the first three episodes as Syril Karn. He has a counterproductive sense of maverick power – like a mirrored version of what happened to Oscar Isaac’s pilot Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

It’s smart to have multiple support characters, especially when Andor longest run of any Star Wars TV series. Ewan McGregor led by Ewan Obi-Wan Kenobi technically the shortest at six episodes, though Books by Boba Fett spend only five episodes for the main character because the other two episodes are like The Mandalorian season 2.5. Come to think of it, Baby Yoda is the longest show to date with eight episodes each for both its seasons. But while The Mandalorian is much longer, Andor Posted more often.

Watched four out of 12 episodes – you could call it the first of three, because Luna was describe do Andor like a “very long movie” – I’m curious to see how they handle the rest of it. It also means that this is by no means final. But it’s interesting to see that Star Wars may represent something other than the mid-autumn tales of the Jedi and the bounty hunters we’ve been served with over the past few years. It’s been so long, this franchise is fun to read the ground again, tap into nostalgia, revisit the past, and call it a day. And even though Andor being a prequel to a prequel, it still feels like it’s creating a new platform.

Andor premieres Wednesday, September 21 on Disney + and Disney + Hotstar. A new episode will air every Wednesday at around 12:30 p.m. IST / 12 a.m. pacific time until November 23, in India, Andor available in English and Hindi.
