Amir Khan Reveals The Shocking Reason For Mayweather The Fight Never Happened
Amir Khan has shed light on why a huge money fight with former king Floyd Mayweather never materialized.
Boxer Bolton was repeatedly said to fight Mayweather in the early 2010s when the two were among the elite fighters of the Korean weight division, but in the end, they would never split a ring.
Talk to former Manchester United captain Gary Neville on OverlappingKhan revealed that the contract to face Mayweather was indeed signed, but the American pulled out at the last minute – as Khan announced the fight before him.
“Me and him (Mayweather) had to fight. I signed all the contracts, everything was negotiated and signed off.
Why doesn’t it happen? Because I announced it before him – can you believe it?
He wanted to be the man who announced the fight, but since I announced it, he said ‘look I’m not fighting you’
He believes in his own ego so much that no one can claim something before him.”
Facing Mayweather is sure to be a career high-paying day for Khan, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the fight’s fallout leaves a bit of a bittersweet streak, especially when Khan believes he will beat Mayweather when both fighters are at their peak:
“I beat him. Honestly, I beat Mayweather if I was in my prime and he was in his prime.”
Although the Mayweather bout never materialized with Khan, the former unified world champion still had a series of major fights in the US, going up against the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Zab Judah and Marcos Maidana.
Mayweather ended his professional career with a 50-0 record, but has competed in various shows since retiring. The latest of these will take place on September 28orderwhen he was going to fight Japanese MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura.
Khan, who announced his retirement after a suffocating loss to Kell Brook in February of this year, he himself expressed his desire to face Mayweather in a future exhibition match.
