American activist shot dead in occupied West Bank

A 26-year-old American woman was shot dead in the occupied West Bank during a protest.

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, of Turkish origin, is believed to have taken part in a protest against the expansion of Jewish settlements in the town of Beita near Nablus.

According to local media reports, Ms. Ezgi Eygi was shot by the Israeli military. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were aware of the incident and were investigating.

The American activist was taken to hospital in Nablus with a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead, AFP news agency reported.

According to Palestinian media reports, the 26-year-old man was involved in a campaign to protect farmers from violence by Israeli settlers.

It comes later. Israeli forces withdraw from Jenin city and refugee camps in the occupied West Bank, after a major nine-day operation there.

At least 36 Palestinians were killed in the operation, 21 from Jenin province, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Most of those killed were claimed by armed groups, but the ministry said children were among the dead.

Over the past 50 years, Israel has built settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where more than 700,000 Jews now live.

Settlements are considered illegal under international law – a position held by the UN Security Council and the British government, among others – although Israel denies this.
