AMD is working on its next generation graphics upgrade technology and if it’s as good as AMD claims it will be great news for gamers.
New details about the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) graphics enhancer come from GDC 2023, where AMD showcased game developers who have gathered information on how new technology is shaping up. Based on KitGuru (opens in a new tab)AMD’s Stephan Hodes, from Team Red’s Core Technology Team, explained how FSR has evolved from the initial 1.0 version to where it is now (FSR 2.2) and how FSR 3 improves the technology further.
According to AMD, the number of pixels that FSR 2 computes is larger than the number of samples available, but the number of rendered pixels can still be increased by inserting interpolation frames into the pipeline.
This allows for a significant increase in frame rate, sometimes 2x the number of frames. AMD doesn’t specify use cases where you can double the frame rate, but for some lower-demand games like e-sports it’s certainly doable.
There are still many technical hurdles to be solved, such as difficulties with some motion interpolation, so this technology is best used when the input frame rate is greater than 60 fps. Furthermore, interpolated frames introduce a delay that needs to be managed.
AMD FSR 3 makes me fall in love with AMD’s line of graphics cards
While AMD makes some best graphics card All around, a big draw for Nvidia’s GPUs is DLSS, Team Green’s upscaling technology that outperforms AMD’s competing technology.
Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) relies on hardware acceleration to power the AI-driven upscaler, something AMD’s FSR lacks. That’s not to say FSR is weak, as you can still see some significant frame rate improvements when using FSR and FSR is not hardware bound so any graphics card can Take advantage of it, as long as the game your playing supports it.
But DLSS is absolutely amazing and DLSS 3 is a revolution in gaming technology. If you are lucky enough to own one Nvidia Lovelace RTX 4000 Series graphics card, you will get great performance, no doubt.
But it’s, like, five of you out there. For the rest of us, we want smooth fps gameplay at an accessible price, and this is where the AMD FSR 3 can really shine.
Will it ever be as good as DLSS? Not without hardware acceleration, it won’t. Is it good enough to run at 60fps at 4K and above? Yes, the best AMD graphics cardthe AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTXwas able to do that with FSR 2.1 and Radeon RX 7900 XT is no less.
Assuming that the RX 7800 XT and even the RX 7700 XT have enough VRAM to run at 4K, FSR 3 should be able to get you playable frames at that resolution on some Best PC games (though maybe not Cyberpunk 2077 or similar).
This will be a great bargain for mid-range gamers who haven’t really been able to enjoy all the best that the latest generation has to offer. gaming computer hardware has become possible, so the sooner technology like FSR 3 comes out, the better.
