AMD RDNA 3 GPU rumored to be a serious competitor to Nvidia RTX 4090 and 4080

AMD RDNA 3 Graphics Card almost here, and a rumored result has finally surfaced on YouTube making for some interesting revelations, although we must maintain a skeptical view when evaluating all of this.
Video from Moore’s Law is dead (opens in a new tab) (MLID), the major contributor to the GPU (and CPU for that matter) leaks, with the clip covering a wide range of topics related to the impending RDNA 3 launch, including usage power, performance and possible reserves.
MLID begins by saying that his sources have confirmed the technical information previously disclosed by VideoCardz is correct and that both the first two models of the RDNA 3 graphics card should be the RX 7900 XT and a version 7900 XTX is a bit more powerful. They will apparently run with 10,752 stream processors (SPs, i.e. cores) and 12,288 SPs respectively, with 20GB and 24GB of VRAM (running at 20Gbps, with a 384-bit and 320-bit memory bus, respectively).
The reason the 7900’s XTX flavor was included instead of the 7950 XT was that AMD wanted to leave room for a more powerful flagship in the line (as happened with the 6950 XT).
In terms of power usage, MLID claims the 7900 XTX will likely run at 350W (this is AMD’s reference board), with the 7900 XT coming in at around 300W. As always, keep in mind that third party versions of these graphics cards can be boosted (maybe up to 450W or more) and with clocks, but this is what our reference cards do. AMD will run with (and some third party models, no doubt).
So what is to be expected in terms of performance, then? MLID warns us that the top-end 7900 XTX is unlikely to beat Nvidia’s RTX 4090 in rasterization performance at 4K.
That said, this is where the 7950 XT theoretically comes into play at some point, with plenty of headroom to push performance further with clocks, faster VRAM, and more Infinity Cache.
Analysis: A strong competitor to the RTX 4090 – and more than the 4080?
MLID notes with performance that it’s possible that the 7900 XTX could end up very close to the RTX 4090, at least in the grading process (the gap with ray tracing will be larger since Nvidia has a clear advantage here). AMD’s top-of-the-line GPU can even trade off with the RTX 4090, perhaps outperforming performance in some cases, so it’s not a bad situation for Team Red.
Furthermore, even if the reference sheet is a bit short, those 450W (or so) more powerful third-party 7900 XTX models can still prove a good match for the RTX 4090 – although it really is. too early to tell.
On the power front, this refreshing gossip from the vine matches what we’ve been hearing in recent leaks about Top RDNA 3 using only 2 x 8 pin power connectors. Indeed, that’s better news since not only is the 7900 XT set to use that configuration, but also the XTX version if this rumor is true about it running at 350W. (The dual 8-pin connectors deliver 150W each, for 300W, plus 75W from the PCIe slot itself for 375W, enough to power a 350W card).
If true, let’s hope AMD makes a fuss about this in the face of the top competitor from Nvidia, the RTX 4090, which uses that 4 x 8 pin adapter setup (for those who don’t have one of the the new ATX 3.0 power supply supports the original 4090’s 16-pin connector). Mainly because of the whole Nvidia adapter melting controversy is now embroiled inof course.
MLID actually observes that AMD’s graphics card manufacturing partners can push up to 3 x 8 pin connectors with boards up to 450W and significantly more powerful; also use beefier coolers of course. (MLID suggests that those cooling solutions could be superseded from the RTX 4090 designs, in fact, with the 4090 cards ending up thinner than anticipated).
AMD’s more powerful clocked graphics cards won’t arrive until much later, mind you, and initially the 7900 XT and XTX products we’ll see released will be on the same reference line as the kit. reference cooling. As for when we might see these hit the shelves first, MLID thinks late November or early December, and then what we’ve been hearing from the rumor mill elsewhere. So you’ll probably wait a month to actually be able to buy these RDNA 3 graphics cards (and a few more months for third-party formula-driven support).
As for pricing, MLID theorizes that AMD will pin a high-end card on top of the 7900 XTX, but it will cut the RTX 4090 – although leaked sources aren’t sure by how much. That sounds a bit ominous as the price could be close to a hefty price above the 4090, sadly – but the 7900 XT could be a different story and could end up undercutting Nvidia drastically. stronger.
There are a lot of question marks here as it looks like AMD itself has yet to make a final decision on cost – and of course any relative value proposition depends on how these graphics cards come in. in terms of performance compared to the RTX 4090 and 4080.
Talk about RTX 4080MLID believes RX 7900 XT can prove more than one of its rivals, can beat Nvidia graphics card a bit for the frame rate, and certainly to save power, while also being much smaller and less of a headache to fit in your average PC case.
Final inventory note: MLID asserts that while AMD might be off to a slow start on launch day (probably early December as mentioned), things should improve for the week. quickly, with the large number of RDNA 3 graphics cards available before 2022 it will be exhausted. The theory is that AMD should be able to ship at least the same volume as Nvidia manages with their Lovelace GPUs, or possibly more – though inventory can still sell out fast and sadly scale up. still effective.
