Amazon Workers at a warehouse in upstate New York filed a request to form a union with the National Labor Relations Board, the agency confirmed Tuesday.
Employees at the warehouse, located in the town of Schodack, southeast of Albany, New York, are seeking to be represented by the Amazon Federation of Labor, a grassroots group that includes current and former Amazon workers. successful merger one of the company’s Staten Island warehouses, called JFK8, earlier this year.
NLRB spokeswoman Kayla Blado confirmed organizers at the warehouse, known as ALB1, filed an application with the agency Tuesday for a proposed 400-person unit. She added that the NLRB’s regional office in Buffalo is in the process of verifying that the group has acquired an interest, which indicates that it has met the required threshold for employee signatures.
Heather Goodall, an ALB1 warehouse worker who is leading the organizing effort, said she and other organizers plan to hold a news conference on Wednesday to discuss the union’s campaign.
Goodall and other workers have been trying to organize their workplaces for the past few months. Amazon took note. Late last month, it began holding meetings at ALB1 discouraging employee solidarity, including slide presentations describing the union as a “business that sells services.”
The effort to organize in Albany marks Amazon’s latest attempt to unify a warehouse.
