BENGALURU: The Ministry of Labor Union has sent notice to the e-commerce giant Amazon about the voluntary separation program (VSP) it has announced for some of its employees in India. The VSP was announced following Amazon’s plan to reduce 10,000 employees globally.
Deputy labor manager A Anjanappa has asked Amazon for details regarding the VSP and its public policy manager Smitha Sharma was asked to attend a hearing on November 23.
Amazon’s note on VSP states that eligible employees will have the opportunity to voluntarily quit their jobs in exchange for VSP benefits. VSPs must be submitted via smart forms between November 16 and 30. The VSP includes a one-time severance payment equivalent to 22 weeks of base salary, plus one week of base pay for every six months of employment, up to a maximum of 20 weeks of severance pay, plus six months of medical coverage under an insurance benefit policy or equivalent premium amount.
Union Senate young information technology staff (Nites) wrote to the minister of labor Bhupendra Yadav seek government intervention for the VSP. It says that VSP violates labor law. An email sent to Amazon regarding this issue has not received a response as of the time of writing.
