As the Ottawa Senators trade the seventh overall pick at the 2021 draft along with two other options for the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Alex DeBrincat, many think that the Senators are making deals with the idea of signing DeBrincat for a long-term extension. While it’s certainly Ottawa’s preferred choice with their new winger, it appears DeBrincat has yet to make a firm choice on whether to commit to the long-term Senator.
As reported by Athletic’s Ian Mendes, DeBrincat is “not ready” to sign a long-term deal in Ottawa at this point, although he has said he is “open” to the possibility of it. (registration link) DeBrincat will be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024, and without a long-term deal, DeBrincat could accept a minimum $9 million qualifying offer this summer , which will give him the right to be a freelance agent. DeBrincat, who has scored 78 points this season, is an incredibly talented attacking player and someone the Senators certainly want to be a cornerstone member of their club.
