Alchemy sim Potion Craft has the best crafting system ever made

I am a big fan of life simulation mini games. Cooking, crafting, mining, gardening, and all sorts of other video game quests turn something a little mundane into a delightful little treat. Looks like the Niceplay Games developers also agree, as they’ve been enjoying the joys of tactile crafting and creating an entire potion simulation around it – and their crafting system isn’t just brilliant. creative and smart but also very satisfying.

We’ve written about it before, but Poison Crafting is now over. You play as an alchemist who has opened a shop in an old wizard’s hut, ready to sell your variety of beer and bubbly concoctions to the locals. People will come to the store during the day to talk about their problems, so you need to listen to each customer’s problem, craft the right potion to help, and get some lovely gold back. It’s basically a store management simulation, as you earn money, buy ingredients, and haggle to get a good deal. But the best part of Potion Craft is in the title; it is capturing the art of potion.

It’s a bit abstract, so stick with me. Make potions using the map, with your trading tools – cauldron, bellows, mortar and pestle – always at hand. The idea is to move a small potion around the map, stopping when it hits the potion icon. Adding the ingredients to your cauldron will set the bottle’s path and stirring the mixture will set it in motion. When it reaches an icon on the map, you can pump the bellows and your recipe will be brewed into a miracle potion. boom! Ta-da!

I really love the whole process of this system, from the moment you pick up your first ingredient to the moment when the magical smoke is released that signals your potion is complete. Much of the map is obscured by the fog of war, so moving your bottle around feels like taking it on a little adventure into the unknown. Different ingredients will move the potion in a particular direction, so choosing what – and when – to use requires a bit of ingenuity, especially when navigating arrays of skulls that will land the vial your medication back to the starting point, making all your efforts futile.

It’s tactile but never difficult, and takes a great deal of dexterity to master. Stir your cauldron just the right amount to make the bottle stop exactly where you want it to be extremely satisfying and there is a handy water jug ​​that you can use to dilute your mix and move your bottle Return to the original position if you slightly exceed your goal. It is this subtle movement that truly captures the art of potion – or, what I imagine it to be. The closest I’ve ever come to achieving a similar equilibrium is perfecting the balance between white rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream to create the perfect Piña Colada.

Another lovely set of details goes into the way things sound. The bubbling of water as you heat it up, the crackling of roots as you grind it and the clattering of mortars and pestles – it’s like the ASMR of alchemy (after a while Google figured it out). I still have a lot of maps to explore in Potion Craft, so I think this will be my first Christmas game of the holidays.
