Ahmaud Arbery’s convicted murderers were Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan Jr. sentenced

A father and son and their neighbor have been sentenced to life in prison after they were found guilty of killing 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery while he was jogging through a neighborhood near Brunswick, Georgia, in February 2020.

Judge Timothy Walmsley sentenced Travis McMichael, who shot Arbery and his father, Gregory McMichael, who watched the shooting from the back of a pickup truck, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. .

Their neighbor, William Bryan, who videotaped Arbery’s final moments, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death. Bryan, 52, will not be eligible for parole under Georgia law until he serves 30 years in prison on a conviction of aggravated violence.

In addition to the life sentence for murder, Walmsley applied additional sentences for other charges.

The additional sentences are:

  • Because Travis McMichael, 35, Walmsley imposed additional prison sentences of 20 years for McMichael’s aggravated assault charge and 5 years for his attempt to carry out a felony conviction. The judge said the additional sentences would be served parallel to each other but consecutively to life sentences, totaling life in prison without the possibility of parole plus an additional 20 years in prison.
  • Because Gregory McMichael, the judge imposed additional prison sentences of 20 years for McMichael’s aggravated assault charge, 10 years for his false imprisonment, and 5 years for attempted execution of a felony conviction. . The judge said the additional sentences would be served parallel to each other but consecutively to life sentences, totaling life in prison without the possibility of parole plus an additional 20 years in prison.
  • Because William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., the judge imposed additional prison sentences of 10 years in prison for his felony count and 5 years for his attempted felony. The judge ruled that additional sentences totaling 15 years would be suspended, resulting in a life sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

More context: A jury consisting of 9 white women, 2 white men and one black man, found these men guilty of state murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and attempted a felony in November.

What happens next: Defense teams for all three men said they plan to appeal their client’s convictions.

The men will return to court in February, to begin their federal trial, where they will face hate crime charges over Arbery’s death.
