Ahead of assembly polls, Gujarat govt decides to form committee for Uniform Civil Code implementation | Gujarat Election News


NEW DELHI: In an important decision ahead of the congressional elections, Gujarat on Saturday, the government formed a commission to implement Unified Civil Code (UCC) within the state.
Gujarat Foreign Minister Harsh Sanghvi said the state cabinet approved the proposal to form the committee during a meeting held on Saturday. “The committee will be headed by a retired supreme court judge and will have between three and four members,” said Union Minister Parshottam Rupala.
Earlier, the governments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh established a panel of experts headed by a retired person. Supreme Court judges to implement a uniform Civil Code for the state. Goa is the only state in India with a uniform civil code.
The Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India for the formulation and implementation of individual citizenship laws that apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender and sexual orientation. Many political leaders who support UCC say it will bring equality in the country.
