Agritourism hotspot: Safranbolu .’s saffron-lavender garden

Safranbolu, a district in the Karabük province of Türkiye known for its famous historic houses designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recently opened a charming garden that combines the cultivation of saffron and lavender.

This initiative aims to promote tourism and promote agritourism in the region.

Implemented in collaboration between the Provincial General Department of Agriculture and Forestry and the Safranbolu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the “Lavender Scented Saffron Garden” project was launched to increase saffron production and contribute to agro-tourism.

According to Çetin Ayvalık, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, the project was initiated last year, establishing a 55-decare lavender and saffron garden in the village of Gayza.

Ayvalık notes that 35 decares of land were set aside to grow lavender last April and May, creating the world’s largest lavender maze. After 15 months of care and dedication, the growth and development of the lavender flowers in the garden made him very satisfied.

He further explained that the rest of the garden is allotted for saffron planting in August and the first saffron harvest takes place in November.

Interestingly, the lavender harvest has now begun, Ayvalık expressed joy at having a bountiful year.

The garden also has a distillation facility to extract lavender oil of excellent quality. These oils will be bottled and sold at the garden’s dedicated sales office, providing a unique and authentic experience for visitors and consumers.

Introducing the project as “Safranova”, Ayvalık emphasizes the aesthetic of the garden, likening it to a natural photo studio.

With the completion of the visual aspect of the project, Ayvalık invited all agrotourism and ecotourism enthusiasts to experience the wonders of “Safranova”.

In entrance of Safranbolu’s famous Glass TerraceSpacious and enchanting gardens are eagerly awaiting curious visitors from across the country and around the world.
