Magic is making a comeback as fantasy strategy sequel Age of Magic 4 arrives on Steam on May 2, developer Triumph Studios has revealed. The 4X game was announced during a live stream today hosted by publisher Paradox Interactive. This will be the first Age Of Wonders in 9 years not to break into the realm of science fiction and introduce a new custom faction system. If you’re not interested in the almighty mage kings who rule over humans like gods then Age Of Wonders is probably right up your magic alley, because you’ll have to defeat them in no time. ie through their shimmering gate. Age Of Wonders 4 gives you the chance to fight back against these witch invaders using destructive magic books and armies that you can control into new forms. There will be monsters roaming to engage, but your forces can also surround their enemies in massive turn-based tactical combat.
Something new to the series with Age Of Wonders 4 is the opportunity to create custom factions. That could mean creating some moody moon elves, or even a bunch of cannibal hybrids. Beautiful. There’s also a new event system that can bring the characters you’ve created into later playthroughs as opponents or allies. Triumph says you’ll be able to create kingdoms to play with, combining slots and features to create a multitude of combinations. Age Of Wonders 4 is also considered the most mod-friendly installment in the series.
The last numbered entry in the series was Age Of Wonders 3 in 2014. However, Triumph released a sci-fi movie about the formula in 2019, which Nate (RPS in peace) thinks it’s a solid, well-designed strategy in its own right.
