‘Africa’s Titanic’: Remembering Senegal’s Joola tragedy
On September 26, 2002, The Joola, a government-owned Senegalese ferry, capsized off the coast of the Gambia, killing more than 1,800 people. Only 64 people survived.
It was the second worst air wartime maritime disaster in history, claiming more lives than the infamous Titanic.
Twenty years on, the BBC investigates why this tragedy happened and tells the heartwarming, heartbreaking stories of survivors and families, who continue to call for the wreck to be lifted from the seabed. .
