Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta resigned on Sunday, days after his party lost to Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi Municipal Committee (MCD) election.
The BJP said Virendra Sachdeva became the party’s working president until the appointment of Gupta’s successor. Adesh Gupta was appointed head of the BJP’s Delhi unit in June 2020.
On Friday, ending speculation about the party claiming the mayor position despite losing in civic polls, Adesh Gupta said the MCD mayor would come from the AAP and BJP will act as “strong opposition”
Several BJP leaders had previously hinted that the party would run for mayor despite losing in the civic polls.
“Now move on to electing the mayor for Delhi. It will all depend on who can hold the numbers in a tight competition, how the nominated councilors vote, etc. For example, Chandigarh has a BJP mayor,” said Amit Malviya, BJP’s head of IT. tweeted on Wednesday when the results were announced.
Suggestions by other party leaders, including Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Tajinder Pal Bagga, also fueled speculation that the BJP might run for mayor.
It is further reinforced by the example of Chandigarh, where the AAP earlier this year emerged as the biggest party by winning 14 out of 35 wards in the city polls, but the BJP secured the market position. chief.
However, Mr. Gupta quashed all speculation. “The BJP will act as a strong opposition in the MCD,” he told NDTV.
“AAP has received authorization from the people, so they can have their mayor. We send them our best wishes,” Mr. Gupta told PTI news agency.
The AAP on Wednesday beat the BJP in closely watched civics polls. The party led by Arvind Kejriwal scored 134 out of 250 wards, while the BJP won 104. The BJP has overseen the MCD for 15 years.
