Actor and MP Kirron Kher tests positive for COVID-19 again, here’s how you can save yourself from COVID re-infection

On Monday night, politician-turned-actress Kirron Kher revealed that she has tested positive for COVID-19. The 70-year-old shared her diagnosis on Twitter and urged everyone who came into contact with her to get tested. She wrote: “For COVID, my test result was positive. So I urge everyone who has interacted with me to get tested.”
In 2021, Kirron Kher, an MP from the Chandigarh seat, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. But she set a brave example by returning to work after recovering from cancer. In March of the same year, Kirron was vaccinated against COVID at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai as part of India’s largest vaccination campaign.

Who is at risk?

People over 60, with underlying lung, kidney, or heart problems, or who are immunocompromised or obese, are at serious risk of re-infection with COVID. Cancer, especially blood cancer, also has a higher risk of contracting COVID.
How to stay safe?

As we all know, vaccination is very important in preventing COVID infections that lead to severe illness. In India, anyone over the age of 12 is eligible for a COVID shot.

It is very important to avoid crowded places and make sure that you are not stuck in a cramped space with too many people. Wear a mask in case you use public transport. Even when shopping, choose a time when you can avoid large crowds.

If you are vulnerable or are visiting someone in vulnerable health, remember to take COVID precautions – maintain distance and wear a mask. Make sure you follow good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Avoid being around people with respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, sore throat, or a cold in the nose.

Increasing number of H3N2 . flu cases

Not only COVID, H3N2 flu cases are also increasing. Experts are recommending COVID measures to prevent infection. Dr Rajkumar, Senior Consultant – Internal Medicine, Spinal Trauma Center of India explains the increase in influenza virus infections: “This time everyone is being affected by the virus. H3N2. This can be made worse by the fact that in the past 3 years, people have been using masks widely and this H3N2 cannot enter the body. There is therefore a lack of suitable antibodies to combat this. Now with reduced or no masks this virus is entering at the present time and with immunity against it already reduced people are facing long term effects of the virus. This compromised immune system may be the reason and is thought to make people more susceptible to the virus. This is especially seen during the transition of seasons, which can further affect the immune system, thus leading to infections becoming more aggressive and long-lasting. Furthermore, changes in temperature and humidity can also affect the persistence and transmission of viruses, making them more aggressive.”

Persistent coughing can be caused by pollution, with particulate matter, irritant gases and mixed pollutants, all of which are associated with increased coughing and wheezing. Also, frequent weather changes can lead to mucus production. If the cough is caused by a viral infection, rest and rehydration can help relieve the cough. However, if the cough persists for more than a week or is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, it is important to seek medical attention. Pollution can worsen asthma, and the use of a high-quality inhaler can help control it. Lifestyle changes such as avoiding acidic or spicy foods and taking antacids if needed can also help resolve coughs associated with acid reflux.
