About Lecomte Staking

Last year’s Lecomte Staking (G3) winner may have fallen into oblivion because Call Me Midnight lost the next eight races in 2022. However, the Fair Grounds prep race for the Kentucky Derby (G1) was pretty good quality with the field, including winner Travers Stakes (G1) Future epicenter and electronic knife who went on to participate in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Haskell Stakes (G1).

This year’s 3-year-old field also features a few promising runners among the eight who will cross the 1 1/16-mile run on January 21.

first. Echo back (Morning Odds 6-1): Set pace and finish third while turning with solid effort at the Remington Springboard Mile. Should take the lead again and draw the rails that help his career. Numbers are a big player.
RACE: Tyler Gaffalione; TEACHER: Steve Asmussen

2. Denington (8-1): Had an extensive ride when finishing third in Smarty Jones Stakes. Having a better post here and adding a flash… could take a step forward in this area.
RACE: Corey Lanerie; TEACHER: Ken McPeek

3. Bromley (5-1): Won in two starts, but one match on synthetic ground in Race Park. He has yet to run beyond 6 1/2 miles, so there are many questions about his ability to handle two turns when first facing the holdings company.
AUCTION: Javier Castellano; TEACHER: Paulo Lobo

4. confidence game (8-1): Seems to be going up with efforts to improve, winning at Churchill Downs Last time out. He has walked this distance three times and could be a factor if he repeats his last attempt.
RACING: James Graham; TEACHER: Keith Desormeaux

5. Tapit .’s Conquest (9-2): Got a clear first win and have done some promising workouts since that October 1 win at 1 1/16 mile. Coming from a top warehouse and not to be missed, although timing is pretty slow and he has also entered a previous subsidy race on the card.
RACE: Florent Geroux; TEACHER: Brad Cox

6. Itzos (10-1): Like his steady friend Bromley, he joins the holdings after winning the synthetic surface sprint at Turfway. He should be part of a lively tempo and will need extra effort to find results.
RACE: Brian J. Hernandez Jr.; TEACHER: Paulo Lobo

7. Instant coffee (5-2): Looks like part of the Kentucky Derby contender to win the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) as a heavyweight. There’s the running style that benefits from the fast pace and looks like a beatable here from a warehouse with a good track record in the Derby and Triple Crown prep.
RACER: Luis Saez; TEACHER: Brad Cox

8. Two Phil (4-1): Wins big at Street Sense Stakes Level 3 at Churchill, even though it’s a loss. He’s not a factor in The Future of Claiborne Level 1 Breeders at Keeneland but seems to be getting better and will be a factor if the external posting doesn’t pose an issue.
RACE: Jareth Loveberry; TEACHER: Larry Rivelli

OPTION: Instant coffee
