Abel Sanchez surprised by Canelo’s loss to Bivol

Via Allan Fox: Former Gennadiy Golovkin coach Abel Sanchez said he was surprised to see Canelo Alvarez lose to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol last weekend in Las Vegas.

Sanchez had expected Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) to be too much for Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs), but it turned out that the WBA champion’s skill and stature were too much for him. Mexico. Super star.

What might surprise Sanchez is that the referees gave Bivol a tight win with the scores 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113, although he mainly focused on pure boxing.

Sanchez feels going into the fray that Bivol’s “safety first” style will lead to Canelo being awarded the victory, and he is right.

Over the five rounds, the judges surprisingly focused on the handful of power shots Canelo landed and ignored the larger volume Bivol was connecting to.

Gennady did the same thing in his two matches against Canelo, but the umpires did not award him victory in either of them.

Those two games show how difficult it is to beat superstar Canelo, and we saw the same thing last Saturday, when Bivol made a 12-round decision in a match he appeared to win. win 10-2.

“I think Canelo should winand I think Canelo is the busier fighter in battles,” Abel Sanchez told Fighthype about Canelo Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol last weekend.

“I think Bivol once had a safety first, but is a very talented fighter. Just like Gennadiy [Golovkin]. He’s a world champion, an amateur world champion; he was undefeated, and he was an older guy and very well educated.

“I told Bernie that if Bivol comes out of his first safe, it could be an interesting fight because Bivol is a very talented fighter. Obviously, from what I heard, he came out of his shell and attacked Canelo,” Sanchez said.

Bivol fought hard against Canelo, attacking him with coordinated plays that put the superstar in a challenging position where he needed to work harder than he could possibly do.

What the match showed Canelo was helpless when the opponent attacked him with persistent coordination.

He is good at blocking and countering single hits, but he can’t do anything when Bivol hits him with combos of four to six punches.

The red-faced and tired-looking Canelo looked distressed as he gestured Bivol forward after being bombarded with a constant fever in the fifth inning.

If Bivol decides to unload his gear in that round, he’ll most likely take out Canelo because he’s exhausted and powerless.

“Canelo did what very few boxers are willing to do today,” said Sanchez. “His first title was at 147. So he moved to 175, and it was a big challenge for him. He fought one of the more talented fighters in the division.

“I don’t think Bivol has the style to beat him, but obviously, I was wrong. I think he’s the kind of fighter and the attitude he’s brought into this game, I think he’ll be back in the rematch,” Sanchez said when asked what Canelo should do next.

“I think he went back and tried to figure out what was wrong and tried to fix it. There’s nothing wrong with rematching a good battle. From what I heard, it was a very, very good fight.

“It was a fan-friendly fight,” Sanchez said of the fight between Bivol and Canelo. “So if they do it again, it will be like a war. But there is also the possibility of a Gennadiy war [for Canelo].

“Those two games were great for him. Dealing with Canelo in the games we’ve had, he’s a very competitive guy and he probably wants that back,” said Sanchez.
