Abel Sanchez discusses Gennadiy Golovkin’s loss to Canelo Alvarez

Via Sean Jones: Gennadiy Golovkin’s former coach, Abel Sanchez, watched last Saturday night’s loss to Canelo Alvarez and he felt he had the wrong game plan by beating the Mexican star.

Sanchez said that for Golovkin or anyone to beat Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs), you have to be fierce and fight him the way Dmitry Bivol did last May.

Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) failed to do so, and Sanchez thinks the game plan was wrong for Gennadiy. He also thinks that Golovkin has too many coaches. According to Sanchez, Golovkin has Johnathon Banks along with four to four other coaches with no record.

Sanchez felt that Golovkin had moved away from his usual fighting style by choosing to defeat Canelo instead of being aggressive and pressuring him. It’s unclear if Golovkin came up with the idea on his own or if it was head coach Banks’ idea to try and sign up for Canelo.

Without Golovkin’s throw combination, he would never have beaten Canelo. In addition, Golovkin fought timidly, as if he was afraid to let go for fear of being counterattacked by Canelo.

Interestingly, Sanchez said he would be interested in coaching Golovkin again if he contacted him or had someone call him.

He feels that Golovkin is not too old to be successful, but it will have to be at 160. That is where Sanchez feels Golovkin is at his best.

“What is that saying, ‘A guy [Golovkin] do not want to fight, and others [Canelo] very happy about it,” Abel Sanchez told Fighthypereact to Gennadiy Golovkin’s loss to Canelo Alvarez last weekend.

“I just feel that they fought 24 rounds and they know each other so well that it was a powerful blow to the glove type of the session. No one wants to be responsible.

“I don’t know why Golovkin. Golovkin, for me, is someone who has to prove more and achieve more when it comes to being a winner.

“Currently Canelo is at the point where he can have a loss like the one against Bivol, and it won’t affect him much. Financially it is.

“I feel for some reason that Gennadiy doesn’t have the strength to do what he did in the first two games. He has no right in the ring, no control over the fight.

“To beat Canelo you have to do what Bivol ultimately did in his career where he was aggressive. That’s what you have to do with Canelo. You have to act to react. You can’t wait to react to Canelo.

“We can tell when a guy wants to win or just survive to not lose so badly and be able to win. It seemed so for the first eight or nine rounds for Gennadiy. I don’t understand.

“It seems to me that his attitude and aggression have diminished towards me during battles. He’s trying to be more of a boxer. I do not understand why. The judges looked at him as if he didn’t win because he wasn’t the aggressor because he was hind legs, backing away, and the other guy was the aggressor.

“When he didn’t do that, he could do whatever he wanted, and Canelo did whatever he wanted in the first six, seven innings. No, I don’t think so,” Sanchez said when asked if Golovkin’s performance was the result of him being 40 years old.

“If you continue your regiment trains the way you were trained. If there is not too much time in the middle of your regiment, then your strength, in his case it is one of his attributes, your strength will remain.

“Looks like his punches aren’t as effective as they used to be. I remember in many of his fights that as soon as he threw a punch at the beginning of the fight, you would see a change in your opponent’s gaze and behavior.

“In the last game that I saw the clip, three or four games before this match, I didn’t see it in the eyes of the opponent. I view them as ‘I can get through those punches. They won’t hurt me. ‘

“Gennadiy is a strong puncher; he is a strong hand, and if his timing is correct and he throws a combination, he will hurt everyone. He didn’t do that.

“It seems like he has to stick around the boys to take them down, whereas before he could hurt them with anything he wanted to hurt them.

“We can’t blame Johnathon [Banks]. When a boxer reaches a certain level at a certain time, we, as coaches, can recommend. I’m the kind of coach I ask for. A lot of coaches suggested what we needed to do.

“I think Johnathon did what he thought he needed to do because of the instructions he received from his boxer in the gym. You must have a trainer that matches your style with which you are used to fighting.

“For four other coaches who have never had a track record with any boxer, Gennadiy Golovkin is a test for them. That’s a bit unfair to Golovkin, in my opinion.

“I do not see the Golovkin that we have seen in the past in this battle. Yes, I think so,” said Sanchez when asked if Golovkin should retire. “It was not clear to me.

“Yes, he doesn’t look as good as he used to. If he goes back and changes some things, he will be better. He needs to assess his situation and evaluate it in his best interest.

“If what he’s doing isn’t working in the fight, then maybe he needs to reevaluate it. No, I’ll be the last to tell him he needs to retire.

“Unfortunately, they talk a lot, but produce nothing,” Sanchez said when asked if he would like to see Golovkin play Demetrius Andrade or Jermall Charlo next.

“Who did Andrade really fight? How long has it been since they fought? The only person I see that would be a threat to either of them, Canelo and Golovkin would be Benavidez at 168.

“I don’t think Golovkin needs to go to 168. I think he needs to be at 160, defend his titles and go into the sunset on his terms. Even Charlo. When was the last time Charlo fought, and who did he fight?

“It’s not that he didn’t deserve the fight. Like everyone is criticizing Canelo for going up against Golovkin, an old man in his 40s. Look at his track record. Look at Canelo’s resume. He’s always fighting some very nice people.

“At least Golovkin fought some guys and defended. Charlo, it’s been at least a year since he fought, and he’s not forced to fight anyone.

“I don’t know who Golovkin will fight next. I guess the organizations will determine that. I think the guy who fights him has to be a guy who is in the ring regularly or at least twice a year to be worthy of a title.

“If you’re on the bench just because you’re #1 doesn’t mean you deserve a title from me.

“It was an uphill fight,” Sanchez said when asked if Canelo should fight Dmitry Bivol again. “During the fight with Canelo, he took the opportunity; he supported him. He did all the things I think Golovkin was supposed to do on Saturday night.

“Bivol is Golovkin, but weighs just over 15 pounds, but has the same amateur credentials. I’d love to see Canelo defend at 168. I don’t think it’s in his best interest to go up to 175 again, especially against Bivol or Beterbiev who I’ve talked about before it’s going to be a tough fight. towel.

“Those guys are big, and they’re big boxers. They can shoot, and they are very skilled. I want him [Canelo] at 168 and face the lion cubs at 168.

“He is still young. What is he, 32 years old? It’s not like he’s going to give up so much with age. Yes, he has a lot of miles in his boxing life, but he is still young.

“He can still fight those guys, and how many times do I think a little man goes up to a big and successful man? Very rarely because of those guys, especially for Bivol and Beterbiev. They are 185, 190 and 200. They will drop to 175.

“Canelo started at 147, so he is advancing. I honestly think he has a lot of challenges at 168 if he accepts them.

“Actually not,” Sanchez said when asked if he was interested in coaching Golovkin again. “I think that would be an insult on my part because it would be an insult to Johnathon.

“I think it will have to be initiated by Golovkin or someone for Golovkin with Golovkin’s approval. I will never initiate that call. It was an insult to his coach,” said Sanchez.
