Recent technological advances are opening up new and exciting opportunities to communicate with others and visit remote locations. These advancements include telescopic robotics, a moving robotic system that allows users to virtualize navigation in remote environments and interact with people in these environments.

Researchers at Hanyang University and Duksung Women’s University in South Korea have recently developed a promising telecommunications system based on a humanoid robot, a head-mounted display, a motion transporter, a voice transmitter and a vision transport system.

This system, introduced in a paper published in International journal of social roboticsallow user to take full-body ownership of the body of a humanoid robot, thus being able to access remote environments and interact with both people and objects in these environments as if they were there.

“The present study aims to develop a beam projection system that gives full body ownership through a humanoid robot and investigates the user’s telematics experience such as the role of visitor and locality. with varying degrees of control,” wrote Myeongul Jung, Jejoong Kim, Kyungsik Han and Kwanguk (Kenny) Kim in their paper.

The main goal of Jung and his colleagues’ recent work has been to develop a telepathic system that would allow the user to fully transform into a humanoid robot within a remote location, uses its body to navigate the environment and interact with others in it. To evaluate their system, the researchers performed a series of tests, in which users were asked to directly use their system, assume the role of “visitor” or interact with a robot. bots operated by other users, taking on the role of “locals.”

Jung, Kim, Han and Kim write in the article: “Forty participants were assigned both the visitor and local roles, and the ability to make eye contact, emotions, words, and gestures of they were investigated.

In the researchers’ experiment, participants interacted with each other in pairs, where one person controlled the humanoid robot and the other interacted with it. Pairs completed three trials. In the first, the robot is static and cannot be moved by the user, in the second it can only turn its head and its movement is synchronized with the movement of the user and in the second part three, its entire body can move in ways that are mirrored by the user’s movements.

“The results show that subjective reports of visitors’ telecommunications experiences are often controlled in a stepwise manner depending on how controllable the alternative is, while local residents’ reports not,” Jung, Kim, Han and Kim wrote in their article. “However, the emotional, verbal, and gestural communication of the participants showed a tendency to synchronize between visitors and locals.”

The findings gathered by this team of researchers highlight the potential value of a telepathic system that allows the user to transform into a humanoid robot. In their tests, Jung and his colleagues found when users have better control over humanoid robotTheir bodies and robots mirror their movements, their eye contact, their emotional communication style, their words, and their gestures are better suited to the human they’re interacting with.

In the future, the system proposed by the team of researchers could be used to enhance telecommunications applications, which require remote interaction of users with others. In addition, it may inspire the creation of similar systems based on humanoid robot.
