OpenAI Lets Companies Customize Their Most Powerful AI Models
OpenAI is releasing a new feature that lets enterprise customers use their company data to customize the artificial intelligence startup’s most powerful model, GPT-4o.
The move comes as startups face increasing competition for enterprise AI products and businesses come under increasing pressure to demonstrate the benefits of investing in AI.
OpenAI plans to roll out customization, known in the AI industry as fine-tuning, on Tuesday. Fine-tuning allows existing AI models to be trained with additional information about a specific type of task or subject area. For example, a skateboard company could fine-tune an AI model so it could be used as a customer service chatbot that could answer questions about wheels and specific details about skateboard care.
This capability is new to the OpenAI server model — the fine-tuning capability was previously unavailable on GPT-4o or its predecessor GPT-4. However, the company has allowed users to tweak many of its other models, including GPT-4o smallThis is a cheaper and more affordable version of GPT-4o.
Many tech companies offer the ability to customize AI models large and small. OpenAI is banking on making it easier for customers to tweak their most powerful models by working directly with the company, rather than using an outside service or a less powerful product, said Olivier Godement, product manager for OpenAI APIs.
“We are particularly focused on lowering the bar, the difficulty level, and the amount of work required to get started,” says Godement.
To fine-tune a model, customers must upload their data to OpenAI’s servers. John Allard, a software engineer at OpenAI who specializes in customization, said the training process takes an hour or two on average. Allard said that initially, users will only be able to fine-tune models with text data, not images or other content.
