Details of the sentence of the woman who killed her neighbor
ABC News reports that a jury convicted Susan Lorincz of manslaughter for killing her neighbor Ajike Owens in June 2023.
In June 2023, The Shade Room confirmed that Susan Lorincz faced multiple charges, including firearms-related offenses, in connection with Owens’ death.
As TSR previously reported, Ajike Owens, a mother of four, confronted Lorincz after Lorincz allegedly threw roller skates and an umbrella at her children while they were playing outside.
Each NBC NewsLorincz then shot and killed Owens with a .380-caliber bullet when Owens knocked on her door on June 2, 2023.
An all-white jury of six found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter, rejecting her claim of self-defense.
Judge Robert Hodges ordered Lorincz to remain in the Marion County Jail without bail until sentencing.
NBC News reported that Lorincz shrugged and showed no remorse as she left the room with prison officers. It is reported that she faces up to 30 years in prison.
According to NBC News, Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, cried throughout the hearing, while a family member shouted, “Oh, my God. Thank you Jesus,” as Lorinz faces conviction and prison sentence.
According to WKMGDias spoke to the media outside the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
“It has been a long journey to get to this point, to this verdict. I am very pleased with the jury, the prosecution. I am at peace with this verdict. We have achieved some justice for Ajike. My heart is a little lighter. Now we are on the path to real healing,” Dias said.
More information about the case and closing arguments
During closing arguments, Lorincz’s attorney claimed that Owens’ aggressive behavior “frightened her,” justifying her use of the gun under Florida’s “self-defense” law.
ABC News reported that Ocala, Florida police arrested Lorincz on June 6, 2023. She pleaded not guilty on July 10, 2023, and the court set bail at $150,000.
NBC News detailed that Lorincz told police in an interview that she feared for her life and just wanted Owens to “go away.” However, killing was never her intention.
“I never intended to kill anyone. I was shaking. I was just so miserable at that time. I felt like my life was in danger.”
WKMG reports that prosecutor Rich Buxman argued that Lorincz’s actions were intentional, not accidental.
“It was not an accident. It was not a situation where she slipped and the gun accidentally went off and hit the door and hit Ms. Owens. That is not what we have here. She intentionally fired it. There is no doubt that the defendant intentionally engaged in conduct that caused the death of Ajike Owens,” Buxman said.
