Nearly 30 GOP members were cited as part of the “Republicans support Harris” The initiative was announced on Sunday. They include Stephanie Grisham, a former White House press secretary under Trump, and national security official Olivia Troye — who served as national security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence. Chuck Hagel and Ray LaHood, Republican cabinet members under President Barack Obama, are also listed.
By publicly opposing the Republican presidential candidate, these officials will become targets of Trump’s attacks.
“We must purge the Party of those who oppose our candidates, and make it harder for a popular Republican President to defeat the crazy left wing extremists. Geoff Duncan is a loser who is falling apart,” Trump tweeted. Social truth on Saturday, referring to the former Georgia lieutenant governor, who has endorsed Harris.
The Harris campaign’s new initiative targeting Republican voters comes two weeks after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris. Since then, the vice president has received an initial boost in the form of record donations, volunteer registrations, and a surge in polls — narrowing the voter gap with Trump.
Despite Harris’s early momentum, she and Trump remain in a tight race that could be decided by a razor-thin margin in November. That statistical balance is why Harris’s campaign is targeting undecided Republicans among those who could be persuaded to oppose their party’s nominee.
“Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism is a disservice to millions of Republicans who no longer believe that Donald Trump’s party represents their values and will vote against him again in November,” Austin Weatherford, the Harris campaign’s national Republican outreach director, said in a memo.
“Vice President Harris and our campaign are working hard to win the support of Republicans who care about protecting democracy and restoring decency,” he added.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
