UN envoy condemns deadly suicide attack on Somali beach

The Al-Shabaab terrorist group is believed to have claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred late on Friday night (local time) and included a suicide bombing followed by a gun battle between militants and security forces.

Thirty-two people were killed and 63 others were injured, some in critical condition, media reports said.

“Lido Beach is a popular place for Somalis to spend time with family, friends and enjoy the beauty of the Somali coast. The targeting of this location is an abominable act that must be condemned in the strongest terms.”, James Swan, Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, said in a New information posted.

“As we join all peace-loving Somalis in mourning this sad loss, I reaffirm the support and solidarity of the United Nations with the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to ensure peace, security and stability in the country,” he added.

Friday night’s attack was one of the deadliest in the country since October 2022 bombing in Mogadishu killing more than 120 people and injuring more than 300.
