During the Epic SNL Cold Open, Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney and more welcome Martin Short to the Five-Timers Club

Right from the first words of the program—Tom Hanks‘ “Hello” stands out—the studio audience is watching Saturday night liveChristmas episode. There is no political rigidity open for us to endure this week before Christmas. Not when the homeowner Short Martin was included in the five o’clock club. Hanks was quickly joined by his five o’clock colleagues Paul Rudd to welcome their newest member. And the stars keep coming, like little Russian dolls wrapped in purple velvet. Tina Fey. Alec Baldwin. Scarlett Johanssonwho slammed the door on the tagalong husband Colin Jost. Especially insolent Kristen Wiigwho warned Short that they wouldn’t have sex like last time and that happened Emma stone anymore, unless she sucks down more of her Marty-tini. One notable absence from the party: our beloved host skip co-star Steve Martin. (“He’s conflicted about me not wanting him here,” Short joked.)

One of the best laughs of the night happened when five people confessed to each other. After Rudd coped The AntsFey’s lame powers and Fey admits it was actually her who was flying the mysterious drones, Hanks revealed “I have never had Covid.”

Melissa McCarthy explains that the five o’clock club is a place for elaborate jokes, where members will politely sip their glasses of wine. Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing instead of gobbling it up. She then proceeds to throw herself through a wall, reaching John Mullaney Enter by stepping over her body. “Is there anything non-alcoholic?” Mulaney asked about the room. “Do you mean the drinks or the people? No matter what,” Fey said. When Short snapped his fingers and called “coat boy,” Jimmy Fallon appeared carrying his precious smoking jacket. It was a truly joyous sight to see all these merry people crowded together on stage to raise a friend’s treasure. When Short exclaimed “Live from New York!” Hanks and Rudd jumped up behind him like kids on Christmas morning.

You might think Short’s monologue would tone down after an opening like that, but he keeps his energy high. Next to an ocean of bright red poinsettias, he tries to explain the dynamic between him and his longtime friend Lorne Michaels. “We were like Trump And Elon MuskThere is no sexual tension. Short had some insight into Musk’s cyber truck antics and dear Sarah Shermanlayers (“don’t worry, that hairstyle will grow out one day”) before moving on to the main event. Listen, this Canadian angel is singing. Set to “We Need a Little Christmas,” Short talks about the need for quality prescription medications during the exciting holiday season while taking us on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour. At one point he draped himself over the psychiatrist’s couch and groaned, “I had a dream that kept repeating I eat and drink Military hammer!” When he ran into Michaels and Fallon, Short stared at the childish late-night host and marveled “God, I’m attracted to you” before treating him to a lustful hug.
