Luigi Mangione and Sean “Diddy” Combs have one thing in common: Their defense attorneys are married to each other.

Before moving into private practice in 2021, Karen served in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for seven years, making her a strong candidate for Mangione’s complex case. “She has as much experience as any human being, especially in state court,” a New York prosecutor told CNN. “She knows every hallway, every judge, every clerk in the courthouse.”
During those years, she frequently encountered cases involving her husband, Marc, including high-profile arrest former director of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn for allegedly sexually assaulting a maid at a New York hotel in 2011. Strauss-Kahn retained Marc as his defense attorney, while Karen—then the head of Manhattan’s trial division under him. In the years since, Marc’s name has appeared in many high-profile court cases, including trial for Leader of the sex cult NXIVM Keith Raniere. He returned to the spotlight when Combs was arrested in September, speaking frequently to the press as the criminal case against Combs played out in Manhattan federal court. Most recently, CBS et al reports that Marc filed a motion on Friday to dismiss Combs’ appeal for bail, which means Combs will remain at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center until his May 2025 trial .
Meanwhile, Karen, who left the DA’s office for private practice in 2021, has made a name for herself as a CNN commentator, podcaster and—according to ABC7—is legal counsel for Law & Ordereven though she wasn’t involved 2002 episode this seemed to foreshadow Mangione’s fateful December 4 action. Karen, who hasn’t responded yet Vanity fairasked for comment, it has not yet been confirmed that she has taken on the defense of one of the most watched suspects in recent times.
Mangione is expected to waive extradition at a hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said during a press conference Friday that means Karen’s show could start as soon as next week. Mangione now faces a second-degree murder charge in New York, although prosecutors say they are still gathering evidence that could allow them to upgrade the charge to first-degree.
According to Thomas Dickey, who represented Mangione in the charges against him in Pennsylvania, his client is expected to plead not guilty to all of the charges against him. “If you’re an American, you believe in the American criminal justice system, you have to assume he’s innocent,” Dickey told CNN. “And none of us would want anything other than that if it were us in their shoes. I’m glad he has support.”
