Instagram will now let you share ‘Demo Filming’: What it means and how it works

If you actively use it Instagram and sharing short-form content using Instagram Reels, you may have experienced moments of uncertainty about your content’s performance or how people will react. This creates friction when deciding whether to post a piece of content or not. To solve this problem, Instagram has launched a new feature called ‘Trial Filming’, as highlighted by Adam Mosseri on Instagram. This feature allows you to share your story without your followers seeing it. In fact, the reel won’t even appear on your own feed. Only after you’re satisfied with your reel’s numbers and performance—after a while—can you choose to share it with your followers and a wider audience.

Test reel: Everything you need to know

First and foremost, this is Instagram’s way to help creators test how new types of content perform. It offers the option to share reels with people who don’t follow you. Instagram claims that you’ll be able to gauge a story’s resonance with non-followers, with key insights available 24 hours after posting.

Even though the reel won’t appear on your profile, your followers can still see it if someone shares it with them. Instagram also mentions that the Trial will be shared with your non-followers, and once you’re satisfied with the performance, you can choose to share it with your followers. You can also set it to automatically share after a certain time.

How to use test coils

To start, create a reel just like you would with any piece of content. Because Demo Reels are designed to test new content, you can experiment with different types of reels before posting them to Demo Reels. When you’re ready, you’ll see the option to enable the Trial Reel feature on the share page, before hitting the share button. After sharing your reel, you’ll find it in your drafts.

It’s important to note that Instagram says only you will know if your reel is a Trial Reel—this won’t be shown to others. You can also choose to share your story automatically with people if it performs well in terms of views in the first 72 hours, or share it with people manually if you feel found that story worked well.
