ChatGPT is a free product of OpenAI. While there are paid plans available, the basic experience doesn’t require you to spend a dime. However, you know what that means, right? ChatGPT and advertising: What we know
The information originates from an interview published by Financial Times. The report said Sarah Friar, OpenAI’s CFO, said the company is looking at ad-based revenue models for integration into ChatGPT. She affirmed that the company aims to be “thoughtful” in this implementation.
The report also highlights that OpenAI’s current business models are working well, with the company experiencing significant growth. At the same time, however, Friar, in a contrary statement, also said that while the company is open to building other revenue streams, it currently has no “active plans” to integrate advertising.

OpenAI is reportedly hiring advertising talent from competitors
Additionally, OpenAI is said to be recruiting talent from competitors such as Google to support its advertising ambitions. This recruiting effort is intended to help the company build expertise in the field and increase revenue. It goes without saying that more and more companies are using advertising as a means to generate revenue.
It’s worth noting that beyond advertising, OpenAI is working on other business models, such as partnering with other tech giants to make their AI accessible on their devices. A typical example is Appleis integrating ChatGPT starting with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2. Users will be able to experience ChatGPT seamlessly integrated into Apple devices, thanks to its collaboration with Apple Intelligence.
That said, it remains to be seen how, when, or if OpenAI will integrate advertising into the mix.
