South Korea’s conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday night, accusing the leftist bloc that controls parliament of supporting North Korea.
Yoon, a hardline former prosecutor, declared a state of emergency saying the opposition Democratic Party of Korea had paralyzed state activities.
The South Korean currency fell to a two-year low on Tuesday following the announcement. The won fell 1.4% against the dollar to 1,423.9, its weakest level since November 2022.
