Daisy Link and Joan Depaz, who are incarcerated at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, spoke with WVSN about how it all went down. According to The Independent, Daisy Link and Joan Depaz said they never met in person but somehow had a child together. Law & Crime reported that they allegedly began talking through the air conditioning vents in their cells. When they spoke to WSVN, Link called their child “a miracle baby” and Depaz compared the conception to “the Virgin Mary.”
Link explained that she easily bonded with Depaz because they spent so much time talking.
“You’re isolated for so long, you start spending hours talking to this person, you know, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room as them,” Link said.
Depaz then remembered that he told her he wanted to have children, but he couldn’t have them for a while because he allegedly faced a first-degree murder charge, according to Law & Crime. From there, they created a plan.
“I always really wanted a child. And I won’t be able to do that for a long time. So if I had to choose someone, you know, it would be you,” Depaz said.
Daisy Link explains that she became pregnant thanks to the prison’s ventilation system. The two discover that she could drop something from her vent and it would fall into Depaz’s vent. Depaz reportedly wrapped her reproductive fluids in Saran wrap five times a day for a month. According to reports, she placed it in yeast infection applicators and introduced them into her body.
“He would roll it up almost like a cigarette, and he would attach it to the line that we had in the vent, and I would pull it through,” Link said.
After several tries, Daisy became pregnant. Their baby girl was born on June 19 and is now 5 months old, living with Joan Depaz’s mother. In an interview with WSVN, Daisy shared her surprise that their plan actually worked and said she had high hopes for their daughter.
“I can’t believe it worked. I think everything happens for a reason. She could be anything. I think she will be something great,” Link said.
