Judge delays sentencing of Donald Trump in money case
President-elect Donald Trump will not face sentencing this month in the hush-hush case. Instead, a judge ruled on Friday (November 22) to delay post-conviction proceedings. Now, the judge ordered prosecutors and Trump’s legal team to meet to discuss the consequences of his 34 charges, according to AP news agency.
Details of the Judge’s sentencing decision against Donald Trump
For context, a jury convicted the Republican president-elect in May of falsifying his business records to conceal the true nature of payments sent to actors Stormy Daniels porn. She ultimately collected $130,000 from Donald to keep quiet about a sexual encounter they allegedly had more than a decade ago. He was married at the time they committed the alleged acts. Trump’s former lawyer allegedly made a series of payments in the days leading up to the 2016 presidential election.
Despite maintaining his innocence, Trump was still sentenced on November 26. However, as president, election and subsequent victorythere are questions about whether that day will ever exist. Judge Juan M. Mercan’s order on Friday raises questions for examination. Additionally, Mercan has not yet set a new sentencing date. He called on both sides to submit additional filings in the next 2.5 weeks on how to proceed after Trump returns to the White House in January 2025.
Trump’s legal team and prosecutors are on opposite sides
Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyers want the case to be completely dismissed immediately. If not, the conviction may affect employment presidential preparation and transition. Trump spokesman and incoming White House communications director Steven Cheung called Friday’s ruling “a decisive victory” for Trump.
However, prosecutors rejected the idea of an outright dismissal. They are said to have suggested that they are willing to keep the case until his election term ends. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, said the solution needed to balance the president’s duty with “the sanctity of the jury’s verdict.” Bragg’s office declined to comment on Friday’s ruling to the AP.
