Report says Google’s search dominance risks forcing Chrome to sell, separating Android from Search

Google Chrome The browser has long been an important part of Google’s core business. It is integrated into most of the company’s products, from Android phones to desktop computers and many other devices. However, Google may soon be asked to sell its Chrome browser division after being determined to have a monopoly in the online search industry. According to BloombergJustice Department antitrust officials have decided to ask a judge to force the sale of Chrome and will also seek to separate Android from search and Google Play business. However, they will not ask a judge to force Google to sell Android.

In addition to being required to sell Google Chrome and separate Android from search and Google Play, Google may also be required by a judge to share more data and information with advertisers so they finally have more control for your advertising and placement. Furthermore, there is also a push for a ban on exclusive contracts which is at the heart of the case against Google.

What does being asked to sell off Google Chrome mean for Google?

Given the current situation, Google Chrome is definitely the most popular web browser, with the largest market share of all internet browsers. In second place is Apple Safari, followed by Edge, Firefox and others (according to Statista). This shows how losing Google Chrome would be a big loss for Google. Currently, Chrome is available on several platforms, including Microsoft WindowsMacOS, iOSiPadOS, Androidand Chrome OS.

Having to sell off this popular browser would reduce Google’s strength in promoting its search business (something the US DOJ wants). If Google Chrome is sold, there may be no guarantee that they will keep Google as the default search engine (not the default in some countries) and much of the Google brand may disappear.

It remains to be seen how the judge will ultimately rule, but given that the judge has already ruled Google a monopolist, it’s not too far-fetched to hope that Google may indeed be forced to give up Google Chrome.
