WhatsApp introduces in-app image search feature to help users quickly verify authenticity and fight misinformation
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that could change the way users interact with images shared in their chats. Currently in beta testing, the tool allows users to search for images on the web right within the app to verify their authenticity. As digital misinformation spreads, this feature provides a simple way to combat rumors and manipulated media without leaving the app.
How the feature works
Currently, the tool is available to select beta testers. It can be accessed via the three-dot menu while viewing images, where users can tap “Web Search” to initiate a reverse image search. This search directs users to relevant context about the image, helping them determine whether it has been altered or misrepresented in any way.

The need for such a tool is becoming more urgent as images are altered and misinformation spreads rapidly across various platforms. Users often have difficulty confirming the origin of an image, which is where WhatsApp’s new feature comes into play. This feature allows users to confirm the authenticity of images with little effort, right in the chat window. This can help prevent the spread of misinformation by giving users the ability to verify the authenticity of images in real time.

Verification is easy and fast
To use the feature, WhatsApp users need to open an image, tap on the three-dot menu icon and select the “Web Search” option. Then, the application will send the image Google for a reverse search. The results will show where the image appears online and whether it has been changed. This makes it easier for users to recognize the validity of an image, eliminating the need for them to download and upload images to search engines.

WhatsApp’s new feature is completely optional, ensuring that users can decide whether they want to use the feature or not. The application processes images for the sole purpose of reverse search without storing, analyzing or using images in any other way, respecting user privacy.
While currently only available to a limited group of beta users on Android, WhatsApp plans to expand the availability of the feature to a wider audience in the coming weeks. This update provides a fast, integrated solution for verifying images shared in everyday conversations.
