SBI Rewards Scam Warning! Messages say customers download malicious apps, the government issues a warning

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued an alert regarding a new scam targeting State Bank of India (SBI) customers. This advisory comes from the central agency of the Government of India and highlights scam messages encouraging users to download the app to claim non-existent “SBI rewards”. PIB shared an example of one such scam message on its social media channels, urging users to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on unknown links and not download strange files.

PIB stated that SBI does not distribute Android application (APK) links or files through SMS or WhatsApp for rewards. To protect themselves from these scams, the government agency advises individuals not to engage with messages from unknown phone numbers that appear trustworthy but are actually attempts to extract export sensitive information.

The nature of the SBI rewards scam involves text messages sent through platforms like WhatsApp. These messages falsely inform customers that they have earned “SBI NetBanking Rewards Points”, often claiming high monetary value, such as Rs. 18,000. The notifications create a sense of urgency by stating that these points will expire soon, putting pressure on users to act quickly. They instructed recipients to download an app called “SBI Rewards” to redeem these points, falsely promising that the money would be deposited directly into their bank accounts.

This scheme is a scam. If recipients follow the instructions provided, they risk downloading malware or APK files that could compromise personal data, including passwords and banking information. Cybersecurity experts warn that such files could allow hackers to access devices remotely, facilitating the theft of sensitive information without the user’s knowledge.

This government warning coincides with an increase in online scams. Cybercriminals continually refine their tactics, often creating fake websites or apps that resemble legitimate websites. Many individuals have fallen victim to these schemes due to the deceptive nature of the messages that often incorporate SBI’s branding and familiar terminology to foster trust.

To protect their sensitive information, government and cybersecurity experts recommend that SBI customers and all online banking users adhere to the following precautions:

1. Avoid clicking links or downloading files received via SMS or WhatsApp, especially from unknown senders or those offering rewards.

2. Exclusively download SBI related apps from reputable sources like Google Play Store or Apple App Store, make sure to verify the legitimacy of the app before installing.
