Video: Digital Foundry’s technical analysis of Sonic X Shadow generations
Sonic X Dark Generation launched on Switch last week and Digital foundry has now released its technical analysis.
In its initial release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Sonic Generations ran at 880 x 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. In the new Switch release, the game runs at 1080p resolution and is technically a “super weird 31.5 fps”. According to Digital Foundry, this particular version of the game also features “intermittent stuttering”.
As for Shadow Generations, it is also limited to 30 fps on Switch but “does not exhibit Sonic Generations’ 31.5 fps problem”. However, it appears to have some “unstable frames” despite having “relatively good image quality”. Notably, Switch loading times can also be significantly longer.
Digital Foundry says it’s still “really happy with this version” and believes Team Sonic has “almost nailed it” even if the Switch version has some “framerate challenges.”
During our time with Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Switch, performance throughout was “stable” with hardly any fluctuations. We were also quite impressed with the visuals in the Switch release, describing them as a “treat”.
