The electric cargo bike comes in two configurations. The first were front-loading bicycles, also known as bakfiets or Long Johns, which suspended a cargo box between the rider and the front wheel. The other layout is the mid-tail or long-tail, which lengthens the rear of the bike to accommodate more bodywork and equipment.
Both shapes have pros and cons. I’ve found that the larger the rider, the more likely they are to want a bike with a front door that, in addition to transporting children, can be used as a large trunk for storing gear and gear. in the yard, etc. However, you will need a garage or storage space and a very good and reliable locking system; they are harder to maneuver and much heavier if you have to go over curbs or rough terrain; and they don’t feel particularly stable at slower speeds.
If you’re smaller or lighter, you may prefer a mid- or long-tail style, which maneuvers more like a conventional bike. However, the weight is hung at the back and higher which makes some people nervous about dropping it. I possess a long tail; I prefer the maneuverability, but it can be annoying to make sure everything is securely tied up on the rack or in the pannier. If possible, I recommend making an appointment at your local bike shop to try out a few models before committing.
