OpenAI CTO Mira Murati resigns: Formerly Elon Musk’s assistant, played a key role in implementing ChatGPT
If you have followed the development of OpenAI as a company, you will know who Mira Murati is. As CTO, she plays an important role in the company’s decision-making, helping it grow ChatGPT products, and even led the charge against the company’s board when it fired Sam Altman last year. However, Murati is now believed to have left OpenAIresigned amid her efforts to “create the time and space to undertake my own journey of discovery”.
Upon leaving, Murati expressed gratitude to the company she joined in 2018, saying: “There is never an ideal time to leave a place one loves, but this moment I It felt so right.”

Who is Mira Murati: Education, background and previous jobs
Murati joined OpenAI in 2018 and quickly rose through the ranks to become CTO of the Microsoft-backed tech giant in 2022. Interestingly, Murati is not of Indian origin, as many believe, or as Her name might suggest. Mira Murati was born in San Francisco and is of Albanian descent.
Murati also studied in America. She became an engineer after completing her Bachelor of Engineering degree from Dartmouth College. She has a wealth of experience, having worked as a Summer Analyst at Goldman Sachs and then with Elon Musk at Tesla from 2013 to 2016. At Tesla, Murati is said to have contributed significantly to the development of the Tesla Model OpenAI in 2018 as Vice President of Applied AI & Partnerships.
During his time at OpenAI, Murati successfully launched ChatGPT, becoming the most popular AI chatbot today, alongside other AI tools such as DALL-E. And as for what’s next, Murati says she wants to take her time and create a space for exploration.

Murati played a key role in bringing back Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI
After Sam Altman briefly left OpenAI, Murati temporarily took over as CEO and voiced his support for Altman. Altman eventually backtracked, choosing not to join Microsoft as CEO of its standalone AI division.
And unlike what some may believe, Murati didn’t leave because of problems with the company. In fact, she shared a farewell message expressing her gratitude. “My main focus now is to do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition, maintaining the momentum we have built,” Murati said.
She also thanked Altman and Greg Brockman, saying: “My six and a half years with the OpenAl team have been an extraordinary privilege. Although I will express my gratitude to many individuals in the coming days, I want to begin by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead their technical organization and their their support throughout the years.”
Altman was quick to express his appreciation for Murati’s contributions. Writing on X, Altman said: “It is difficult to overstate what Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and to all of us individually.” He added, “I feel incredibly grateful to her for what she has helped us build and accomplish, but most of all I feel personally grateful to her for her support and love. love during difficult times. I’m so excited about what she’ll do next.”
