Security Council holds emergency meeting on Lebanon; region ‘on brink of disaster’
The Security Council held an emergency session on Friday following Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut and further south, which killed at least a dozen people. The meeting came amid an escalation of cross-border fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces – and two days of deadly wireless device explosions targeting members of the militant group. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric warned that the region was now “on the brink of disaster”. Users of the UN News app can go here for a live news briefing.
