Sony’s PlayStation Vita exclusive Freedom Wars is getting a Switch remake

Bandai Namco has announced that it will release Freedom Wars Remake for Nintendo Switch and many other platforms on January 10, 2025.

This HD remake of Japan Studio’s PlayStation Vita exclusive celebrates the action RPG’s 10th anniversary, with “every beloved feature” of the original game returning. Here’s the prologue:

“Create and customize your character and sidekicks to battle giant bio-weapons called Abductors in high-altitude, three-dimensional combat – and reduce your million-year prison sentence to become a full-fledged citizen in a dystopian future where being born is a sin.”

There will also be a number of updates and improvements, including “game balance adjustments” and “difficulty options” as well as updates to “weapon crafting and upgrades.” Dimps (comprised of team members who worked on the original Freedom Wars) is assisting Bandai Namco on the remake.

IGN has “hands on” the Switch version and note that it runs at a lower resolution and is capped at 30 FPS:

“I also played a bit of the Nintendo Switch version in handheld mode, and while the resolution is significantly lower and it only runs at 30fps – it’s still playable, but it’s a little disappointing to see a previous Vita game struggling on the Switch. While certainly not a technical marvel by any measure, everything that made the original a Vita classic is either intact or has been tweaked to alleviate the frustrations that aren’t present in modern games.”

When Freedom Wars first released in 2014, our friends at Push Square rated the game seven out of ten stars:
