When, who is nominated and how to watch
The stars of Baby Reindeer, The Bear and The Crown are among those gearing up for the Emmy Awards, the television industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony.
Ripley, Shogun, Abbott Elementary, Slow Horses, 3 Body Problem and Only Murders in the Building are some of the other shows vying for top awards in Los Angeles.
Big names in the running for acting awards include Idris Elba, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr.
Sunday’s event comes just eight months after the last Emmy Awards, which were postponed from September to January this year because of strikes in Hollywood.
Who hosts the Emmy Awards?
This year’s hosts are a Canadian father and son duo. Eugene Levy And Dan Levy.
The pair are best known for co-starring and creating Schitt’s Creek, the comedy that was a hit during the first Covid lockdown and dominated the 2020 Emmy Awards.
Prior to that, Eugene, 77, had a long and successful career in film and television, with roles in American Pie and For Your Consideration, while Dan, 41, has appeared in Sex Education, Modern Family and Netflix’s Good Grief.
“For two Canadians who won our Emmy in a real quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year’s show in a real theatre was heartening enough,” the couple said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be able to raise a glass to this extraordinary television season.”
Elsewhere, Selena Gomez, Billy Crystal, Viola Davis, Jimmy Kimmel, Christine Baranski, Lily Gladstone, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph And Steve Martin will give individual awards.
It seems like some sort of West Wing reunion could be in the works, too, because Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Jimmy Smits, Dulé Hill And Janel Moloney are listed in the column’s speaker list.
A Happy Days reunion is also possible, with Ron Howard And Henry Winkler Both will appear as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Which TV shows are nominated?
The Emmy Awards divide their nominations into three categories – comedy, drama And limited edition
Traditionally, the night’s most prestigious category is best television series — and the same shows often win year after year.
Seven of the past nine years have seen either Succession or Game of Thrones take the top Emmy award. But now that both have ended, the field is open for a potential new entrant to replace them.
The nominees for best TV series this year are: 3 Body Problem, The Morning Show, Fallout, Shogun, The Gilded Age, Slow Horses And Mr. and Mrs. Smithalong with a previous winner, Crown.
Arguably the most exciting category this year is best limited series, which Baby reindeer leading in this field.
Scottish comedian Richard Gadd’s story of being stalked by a woman for years and sexually assaulted by a male TV personality has become the most talked-about show of the year.
But the real-life woman who is said to have inspired the stalker character suing Netflix for defamation, irresponsibility, and privacy violations. Could that hurt the show’s appeal and cost it votes at the Emmys?
Baby Reindeer’s contenders for best limited series are Fargo, Chemistry Lesson, Ripley And True Detective: Night Country.
Meanwhile, nominees in the comedy category include Hacks, Dog Reservations, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Palm Royale, What We Do in the Shadows And There are only murders in the building..
However, the comedy genre is likely to be dominated by BearThis in itself was controversial as many argued that the show was not a comedy and should not compete there.
We’re not speculating on why this show was submitted as a comedy – but some might wonder if it’s because this category is a little easier to win, with less stiff competition than drama.
However, The Bear’s third season wasn’t as critically acclaimed or as beloved by fans as the first two seasons, so there’s no guarantee that it will win as many awards as its predecessors.
