It’s hard to argue with an impressive two-decade streak, and that’s basically it. Daily program and its live offshoots have been present at the Emmys since the early 2000s. Expect this trend to continue at the Emmy Awards 2024 awards ceremony on Sunday night, when Daily program and the host returns Jon Stewart received another trophy for outstanding talk series.
The run started 21 years ago, when The Daily Show with Jon Stewart—has become a nightly dose of reality and common sense in a post-9/11 era dominated by George W. Bush government misinformation and Fox News distortion—won its first Primetime Emmy for outstanding comedy, music, or variety series. It won again in 2004. And 2005. And so on, winning a few more writing awards until 2011, when the top category was renamed “outstanding variety series.”
In 2012, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won its first Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. At the turn of the decade, in 2013, the show finally lost The Colbert Reporta side show featuring Stephen Colbert, who made his breakthrough as one of the Daily programstar contributors of. The Colbert Report won again in 2014, but then Daily program returned the following year in a category that was this time renamed “outstanding variety talk show.”
Stewart left the show that year, leaving the hosting seat to Trevor Noah. In 2016, the late-night talk show championship moved to HBO. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, also involved a Daily program Alumni and started shortly after Oliver had a lauded tenure replacing Stewart (who was filming) Daily program. Oliver’s solo show won the Variety-talk award every year until 2022, when the Television Academy responded to complaints to change the category. again to differentiate between Oliver’s show, which airs only once a week, and other shows that air almost every night.
Oliver went on to win in 2023 in his new category, outstanding scripted variety series, while The Daily Show with Trevor Noah reclaimed the title for outstanding talk series—just like its The host has walked away. When the comedy news show was looking for a new host, it hit a few speed bump Along the way, Stewart was eventually recruited to return to work at his old desk one night a week.
His return brought a surge in viewership and critical acclaim from most critics, although some left wing followers complained that he sometimes directed his satirical views at Biden administration along with his characteristic criticism of the Republican Party. Stewart has embraced the notion that he is more loyal to facts and fairness than to a particular political party or viewpoint, but he has once again prove that you are important as a divided country heads toward another ominous and painful election.
That brings us to this year, and the talk series title will (almost certainly) go to Daily program again on Sunday.
