Liz Cheney says she’ll vote for Harris because Trump would burn the Constitution in a second term

Donald Trump gave a speech to Pennsylvania voters last night, telling them they had to vote for him even if they didn’t want to, which is not generally considered an effective campaign strategy.

At a town hall with Fox News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, former president declared The voters in the state must go with him because Kamala Harris would ban shale gas drilling—which is not true. After the server Sean Hannity Trump responded by playing an old clip of Harris saying she supported a ban on the practice, to which he said: “She’s going to do it. There’s no chance she’s going to allow it. The election is going to be — if she wins, you’re not going to have any shale gas fracking in Pennsylvania. You have 500,000 jobs. Think about it — that’s your biggest business and you get the majority of your income from shale gas fracking, and you have someone who’s not going to allow shale gas fracking. She’s not going to allow it. You can’t take that risk. You have no choice. You have to vote for me. Even if you don’t like me, you can sit there and say, ‘I can’t stand that guy, but there’s no way I’m going to vote for her.'”

While Harris previously said in 2019 that she would ban shale gas drilling, she has since said she would not do so as president. In an interview with CNN Dana Bash “What I see is that we can grow and strengthen the clean energy economy without banning shale gas,” the vice president said last week.

On whether or not to vote for Trump, former representative Liz Cheney, a lifelong Republican and eldest daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, Cheney said last night at Duke University that not only would she refuse to vote for Trump in November, but she would also vote for Harris. In a conversation with students at the school, Cheney explained that not voting for the GOP nominee is not enough. “I don’t believe we can afford to have a write-in, especially in swing states,” she said. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this—and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, I am voting for Kamala Harris.”

Cheney is one of two Republicans, the other being a former representative. Adam Kinzinger, who sat on the Jan. 6 committee investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the subsequent attack on the Capitol. So she knows something about the dangers of giving Trump a second term in office. Still, it’s far from certain that she’ll fully endorse Harris; on Tuesday, Pat Toomey, a former GOP senator from Pennsylvania, said he would not support either candidate. “When you lose an election and you try to overturn the results so you can stay in power, you lose me—you lose me at that point,” Toomey told CNBC. “I can safely say that none of these candidates would be my choice for president.” Apparently, Cheney didn’t feel that went far enough.
